Homemade Pizza

What do you make when you're low on ingredients and would really love to order out? Pizza! Ours is ready in about the time that it would take to order and pick it up and saves us a bundle on cash and grease.

Prep time: 5 minutes
Cook time: 15 minutes
Ready in: 40 minutes
Serves: 8-10
Cost: approx. $7.00 (or less depending on toppings)

Crust:
1 cup of warm water
1 package of active dry yeast ($.50)
1 tsp. sugar
1 tsp. salt
2 2/12- 3 cups flour ($.50)

Dissolve yeast in warm water. Add all other ingredients. Stir 20 times to mix. Let rise 20 minutes.

Sauce:
8 oz can tomato sauce ($.50)
1 Tbsp. minced garlic
2 tsp. Italian spice blend

Spread dough thinly on large cookie sheet. Top with sauce, 3 cups mozzarella cheese ($2.99), and additional toppings as desired. Our favorite is mushrooms ($1.00) and sausage ($1.50)

Bake at 450 on lowest rack for 15 minutes or until cheese has melted.

mmmm! We just ate homemade cheese & pepperoni pizza's tonight. Fast, yummy and always a crowd pleaser :) I like your sauce recipe I usually buy canned sauce but it would be lots cheaper to make my own!

Do you use white, wheat, or both flours in your crust?

Saralyn, I use whatever I have- which is usually white. I've been known to throw some wheat germ in for good measure. If I have wheat I mix it 2/3 white 1/3 wheat. We don't like our pizza too healthy:)

Looks yummy! We usually have pizza on Fridays. I make two and it is almost not enough to satisfy my family. Do you have any suggestions for making it more satisfying or an inexpensive side dish? I have also been wondering how you handle snacking in your house. I don't want to seem too much like the food police , but I have to to make the food last and make sure everyone gets enough. I think everyone is clearly getting "enough":) but it seems that everyone could eat more at times, especially snacks.

So are you happy with the consistency of the homemade dough?

I want Pizza!!!! Someday......

Sniz,
We like our crust as thin as possible so this dough works out great. It's not soggy, but stays soft.
