Spices

Recently when making my own spice mixes I've just been using what is in the cupboard. Now many of these spices are needing to be replenished and I'm curious as to where to get the best price for quality on bulk spices. I've always just purchased the supermarket variety.

So, please enlighten me. Where do you buy your spices.

I buy most at Sams but if I can get a good deal on a spice with a coupon then I will get it:)

I do Sams as well. I don't really see them get any cheaper anywhere else.

Georgetown Health Foods sells them in bins in bulk. I go there for anything other than garlic powder, basil and oregano.

International food stores around here seem to have the best deals for me. Stuff like cinnamon, cumin, garm masala, and other spices are sold in large quantities for cheap in mexican or indian grocery stores. give it a try!

I split the cost of spices at sams/costco with my mom and we divide up the containers. Also, I get McCormick spices on sale with a coupon at the grocery store.

There is a small in my area called The Spice Man and then often have a booth at the state fair (well, The Pennsylvania Farm Show which is our state fair). They portion out spices in zip top bags for $1 a portion. This is usually pennies on the dollar for expensive spices.

Health food stores and international stores seem to have the freshest most inexpensive spices/herbs. i just keep my original bottles and refill them. ;-)

We don't have a Sam's membership, so I get ours in the big containers at Gorden Food Service - much cheaper than the little bottles at the grocery store. The one exception: Spices I rarely use. Then I go to the health food store, where you can buy spices in bulk, and just get a teeny tiny bit for less than $1.

Try the dollar store. I've not found that their quality is lacking much, but we're not gourmet cooks either!

GFS and Family Dollar! Gordon Food Service sells in bulk for quite cheap (~$4-$7), and Family Dollar has great basics and yummy blends-- I went through two bottles of Italian spices alone last summer (2/$1)!

I get my spices from the bulk bins at Whole Foods or from Kroger when a coupon makes them free or close to it. I have noticed that the bulk spices at Whole Foods are a lot better in quality compared to the stuff from dollar stores.

We have a very sectarian SDA store outside of town that sells all sorts of spices and dried herbs dirt cheap. Do you have any stores like that? Amish, Mennonite?
